RESULTS: After trailing early in the Thursday game, the Eagles rallied against the Fox Tech Buffaloes behind the pitching of Jordan
Stewart. In the 6th inning, the Eagle lineup batted through the order twice. Fifteen straight Eagle batters reached home plate in
that inning. The final score was 21-2, but the game wasn’t really as close as the score might indicate.
On Friday evening, the Eagles faced the Highlands Owls, who had blanked Memorial on Thursday by a score of 9-0. Eagle
starting pitcher Aaron Martinez held the Owls scoreless in the first two innings. By the end of the 2nd inning, Eagles bats had
established a nine run lead and would never look back. The Owls put together a minor rally in the 3rd inning, but the 3 runs
they scored would be their only runs of the game. Brandon Small came on in scoreless relief for the Eagles, who went on to
win by a tally of 12-3. Matt Cavazos and Randy Berg each went 3 for 5 at the plate. Brandon Rivera made it to 1st base every time he appeared at the plate, logging 2 hits and 3 walks.
Saturday at high noon, the tournament semifinals saw the Eagles defeat Brackenridge 4-3. The winning pitcher was Tyler Pinson, who went the distance for the Eagles. The Eagles advance to the tournament championship game, where they will face
the Cougars from New Braunfels Canyon High School.
The championship game of the 2008 SAISD Tournament took place on Saturday evening. Eagle pitcher Matt Cavazos
pitched a complete game, but errors hurt the Eagles badly. All five of Canyon’s runs were unearned, but on the scoreboard,
unearned runs look just the same as earned ones. Canyon won the game 5-0, and took 1st place in the tournament. We salute the Cougars. The Eagles were awarded the tournament’s runner-up trophy.
Congratulations to the Akins Eagles, who finished in 2nd Place in the 2008 SAISD Tournament.
