THE TAG
See the movie

The resolution of this MPEG movie is admittedly poor and its size (12M) is dauntingly large unless you have a fast broadband connection. Having said all that, it's worth watching.

THE SETUP: Bottom of the 6th, 1 out. Seguin has runners Zak Zoeller on 1st and Sam Woodlee on 3rd.

THE ACTION: After Seguin batter Jason Voss takes a ball from Eagle pitcher Jason Rangel, base runner Zoeller starts a leisurely stroll to 2nd base, a ploy to draw attention away from Woodlee, who will attempt to steal home.

Eagle catcher Charles Morton returns the ball to Rangel, who charges the advancing runner. Morton stays at home, covering the plate and watching the runner at 3rd base. Rangel throws the ball to Eagle shortstop Jordan Treviņo, who chases Zoeller back toward 1st. At the last moment, Treviņo flips the ball to waiting Eagle 1st baseman Richard Rogalewski. Zoeller runs headlong into the tag, apparently trying to dislodge the ball with his face before crumpling to the dirt like a stunned mockingbird who's scored a beak-first hit on a plate glass window.

WHAT TO WATCH: Keep your eye on the runner at 1st base.

APR 16, 2004
Postgame handshakes. Rogalewski of the Eagles took this opportunity to offer an apology to Seguin's dugout loudmouth, Zak Zoeller, for whatever injury the latter might have suffered as a result of a 6th-inning tag at 1st base. Zoeller refused to accept the midfield apology, and of course, he did so loudly. Several Seguin parents and fans immediately began jeering the Eagle team members, actually threatening to deal physical violence to the Akins boys. Classy bunch of folks, don't you think? It begins to explain why, in the center of downtown where most communities might have placed a statue of a home-grown war hero or civic leader, the City of Seguin prominently displays the large sculpted likeness of a nut.
