NOTES: Weather: mild, intermittently breezy. At exactly 10:30 PM, in the bottom of the 7th inning, with 2 outs, a count of 1-1 on #7 GONZALEZ, and Lehman trailing the Eagles by a score of 8-7, the overhead field lights went out.
The outage was lengthy, while the HID lamps cooled to restrike and Lehman officials scurried to find access to the lighting control. Although the time at which the lights were to be dumped had been dictated by Lehman High School and Hays CISD, the Lehman public address announcer quickly blamed the outage on an unidentified “third-party contractor.” That self-serving announcement by the voice-from-above sought to deflect responsibility, but it was misleading, at best. As designated by the district, lights for all Hays CISD athletic fields are on timers that are set by the district and its respective schools. Whether or not a contractor is assigned to implement the district’s daily turn-off instruction is immaterial. The timers are ultimately under the control of the district and its schools. Someone at a desk decided that a high school baseball game shouldn’t last three hours. So, LIGHTS OUT at 10:30 PM.
When play finally resumed at Lehman, interrupted Eagles relief pitcher #16 WILSON walked #7 GONZALEZ with 3 straight pitches that were off the plate. Bases became loaded. To be fair, #16 WILSON had struggled. But also to be fair, he had been ahead of the batter and was just two strikes away from the win, when the lights were turned off. The HID field lighting was not the only thing that cooled off. The very next batter, #2 MURILLO, had been a WILSON strikeout victim (looking) in the previous inning. In his appearance after the lighting outage, however, MURILLO hit a solid walk-off 2-RBI single to LF, ending the game with the score AKINS 08 LEHMAN 09.
