Eagle catcher Morton sets up behind the plate. Westlake outfielder Max Minor bats, Tom Oliver (not shown) is on 1st and Robert Hughes threatens from 3rd.

With Rangel on the pitching rubber, Oliver, the runner on 1st, starts to steal 2nd. Rangel steps off and charges the runner. Then Hughes heads for home from 3rd.

Rangel wheels and fires the ball to Morton, who tags Hughes at the plate for the 3rd out of the inning. Morton flips the ball out to the mound, and the Eagle defense hustles in to the dugout for one last turn at bat.

Rangel's fly to left field was the final play of the game.

By actual count, it was TEN SECONDS after Rangel's fly was caught that the anxious scoreboard operator pulled the plug, tucked the controller under his arm and fled the premises. Here's a shot taken just moments before the final play of the game, which took place at 2:54 PM. Did the scoreboard operator have a 3 PM appointment with the dentist?
