022219VA02658 David Wilson scores on Brenham catcher- is injured A sm
NOTES: Top of 4th inning, 1 out, Eagles down 3-0. #16 WILSON on 2nd, #18 GATTIS on 1st. Eagles batter #4 ROMERO swatted down a dribbler between the plate and 1st base. Brenham catcher #12 DRAEHN chased down the ball and threw to 1st base for the out. Each runner advanced a base, but neither stopped with a single base. GATTIS ended up on 3rd; WILSON rounded 3rd and headed for home at full speed, diving and sliding head first to the plate. Catcher DRAEHN rushed back to the plate, receiving the ball from the fielder with no time to spare. Meanwhile, the sole umpire for the game, Patrick Russell TISDALE, was standing in front of the plate, with his back to the plate, his gaze lingering on the action at 1st base and oblivious to the impending play behind him at home. Although every spectator (and most of the players and coaches) could see what was happening, a clearly startled TISDALE snapped his head around to look behind him only when WILSON was approximately 5 feet from the plate. The slide was clean, and the attempted tag did not appear to be improper or malicious, but TISDALE was not in a good position to see the slide or the tag. In the ensuing action at the plate between WILSON and DRAEHN, the ball came out and rolled toward the backstop. Whether the umpire had actually seen the tag or not, the dislodged ball was a clue that the tag had failed. WILSON was safe at the plate. He had scored the only Eagles run of the game, but an injury to his finger that resulted from the play caused him to have to leave the game. The wound was closed with 4 stitches. WILSON, who was the Eagles’ pitcher at the time of his injury at the plate, would also miss the final two games of the Round Rock tournament.

Brenham went on to a 5-0 record in the tournament.

A tournament that charges a spectator 6 dollars for a single game should probably be able to hire the customary two umpires for each game. In high school games, one umpire is typically assigned to the plate, and another is assigned to the field. In the Brenham game, an important play developed literally behind the back of the only umpire. With two umpires, such situations are less likely to happen.

AKINS IS 1-3 overall, 0-1 in district.

GAME 4
ROUND ROCK 2019 TOURNAMENT
Friday, February 22, 2019, at McNeil H.S.  7:25 pm

             1   2   3   4   5   6   7     R   H   E

WINNING PITCHER:  SCHNEIDER
LOSING PITCHER:   TORRES, M

AKINS:       2B WILK, GATTIS
MCNEIL:      2B SCHNEIDER, DOYLE; 3B HOLMES

AKINS IS 1-4 overall, 0-1 in district.

A heartbreaker. Going into the bottom of the final stanza, Eagles led by score of 6-3 in McNeil’s own house. A 3-RBI triple by #26 Elliot HOLMES knotted the game at 6. Two pitches later, #14 Chris DOYLE tapped in the winning run with a walk-off single that scored HOLMES. Perhaps the greatest collaboration of Doyle and Holmes since The Hound of the Baskervilles.

AKINS IS 1-5 overall, 0-1 in district.

Ouch. Trailing by a score of 5-0 going into the final inning, the Eagles saw the wheels fall off their cart altogether. Central’s imposing pitcher, 6’2” 285 pound senior Gunner Couch, will play football at Texas State next year. Couch kept the Eagles off the scoreboard, which wasn’t operating at the start of the game, anyway. According to the public address announcer, “We’re having a little trouble with our scoreboard, so please keep score yourself.” As it turned out, that task was far too easy for the Eagles half of each inning.
